Why do people believe tariffs create more jobs?

Taraffs do not afect the export industry, they protect the local industry from cheap imports and protect the jobs in the country. When you cut tariffs you get high unemployment higher taxes because of less people working and the only ones that gain from it are the countries that have a low dollar and and use low payed workers
