Is it legal to allow my 7 year old son to play with my handgun?

Now, OBVIOUSLY the gun is going to be unloaded, and I will be supervising him at all times when he has it. (And when I am not, it will go right back into a locked gun safe, with the ammunition stored in a separate locked location.) But I think it is really important that he gets a good feel for and becomes comfortable with a real gun when he is young, and also it is a great time to start teaching him basic gun safety. When he is older I'd also like to teach him to shoot, but I don't think I want to give him any bullets until I'm 100% comfortable he knows how to be safe with it, and is a little bit older.
